Description
Why?
Sweeping your chimney or flue is very important. Over time, soot builds up on the surface of interior walls of a chimney or flue. This prevents smoke from escaping and oxygen from entering. Poor ventilation, due to soot build-up, will cause lots of unnecessary smoke. Moreover, oxygen fuels a fire. The more oxygen you have flowing freely into the flue, the hotter your fire will burn. A clean flue or chimney means that your fire will burn at its optimum, thereby making the room warmer whilst using less firewood.
Neglecting to have a regular sweep can be a serious fire hazard.
How often?
We suggest an annual flue or chimney sweep, preferably during Spring.
What?
When we do a sweep, we use a special flue brush on an extended handle. We use a ladder and safety harness to climb onto your roof to access your chimney or flue from the top. We brush downwards from the cowl into the base of the chimney. Then we access the chimney or flue from the bottom (the fire pan area) and brush upwards towards the cowl.
You will be surprised by the amount of soot, ash and sand that is extracted!
Over the years, we have removed not only sticks and branches from chimneys but have also been met with bird nests, a bat home and even a bee hive!
Is it messy?
Having a flue sweep can be a dusty business. But worry not! Our team takes every precaution to ensure that the dust is contained. We use plastic drop sheets and masking tape to close off the base of the chimney or flue. This keeps the dust from escaping.
From a small hole in the plastic drop sheet, the dust and soot is sucked up with a vacuum cleaner.
Our team makes a concerted effort to clean up after themselves.
